Marco Rubio, the United States Secretary of State, arrived in Samarkand, Uzbekistan on Sunday night to meet with senior officials of the C5+1 group. This group includes the United States and five post-Soviet Muslim countries: Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan.
The Importance of Central Asia in U.S. Foreign Policy
Central Asia, a region rich in natural resources located between China, Russia, and Iran, has been highlighted as a strategic point in U.S. foreign policy. U.S. officials believe that this region requires more attention, and Rubio's trip to Uzbekistan is in line with this goal. This is while there are more serious challenges in other parts of the world, including the Iran war and issues related to Ukraine.
Rubio criticized the focus of official trips on crisis points and emphasized that foreign trips should be designed to strengthen long-term relationships. He stated, "One of the things that gets hurt is strategic business. You always travel to a place where there is a crisis or go due to a conference."
Meeting with Uzbek Officials and Regional Questions
Upon Rubio's arrival in Samarkand, the Uzbek Foreign Minister, Bakhtiyor Saidov, warmly welcomed him. Additionally, two women in traditional Uzbek attire presented Rubio and his wife with a bouquet. A Central Asian diplomat, who requested anonymity, stated that officials in the region are considering whether the United States will continue to target circumventing Russian sanctions. All C5 member countries, despite their closeness to the U.S., have deep historical ties with Moscow, and this region is recognized as a bridge for imports and exports from Russia that violate U.S. and EU sanctions.
Rubio's trip to Uzbekistan comes as the Trump administration recently signed an agreement with Moscow for the import of Russian diesel to lower domestic fuel prices ahead of the midterm congressional elections. This has raised concerns about the impact of this agreement on U.S. trade and diplomatic relations with Central Asian countries and India.
Rubio will also meet with business leaders, including Mukesh Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Industries, during his upcoming trip to India. Ambani has drawn attention from the Trump administration this year by supporting a new refinery in Texas.
