The United States government strengthened the relations between the two major economic powers by holding a meeting with Donald Trump and Xi Jinping. This three-day meeting in Washington, D.C. focused more on personal diplomacy rather than major economic agreements.

Focus on Bilateral Relations

During this meeting, Trump and Xi enjoyed tea together in the Red Room of the White House and praised each other. Trump stated that this summit has led to significant advancements and added, "I think our farmers will be happy," but did not provide further details.

Xi also referred to the development of U.S.-China relations, stating that these relations have become constructive and stable, based on respect, fairness, and reciprocity. Xi also announced that he and Trump would have two more opportunities to meet this year, including the APEC summit in China and the G20 summit in Miami.

Details of Trade Agreements

This symbolic summit was accompanied by various programs and ceremonial banquets, but it was not particularly strong in economic content. However, Trump emphasized the progress made under a bilateral trade mechanism and referred to increased market access for American farmers and ranchers. Both leaders also stressed cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence.

The details of the limited agreements reached in this meeting will be published on Monday. U.S. Trade Representative, Jim Son Grill, announced that the United States has reached an agreement with China on the exemption of certain key goods from trade disputes.

At the end of the meeting, Trump and Xi visited the National Archives, where they reviewed the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Trump remarked on the long history and respectful relations between the two countries, stating, "Just as our ancestors reached out to each other for trade and learning centuries ago, our two countries are doing the same, and we take pride in this relationship."

Challenges Facing Relations

Meanwhile, Trump responded to a question about Iran, stating that he and Xi discussed this issue and added, "I think we will proceed well." China has denied any U.S. allegations of helping Iranian leaders in recent conflicts.

Xi also emphasized the importance of the Taiwan issue and hoped that the United States would manage this matter with caution. China considers Taiwan a part of its territory, and Xi is seeking a public declaration from Trump that the United States opposes Taiwan's independence.

Finally, Trump responded to Senate criticisms of this summit, stating that he has not been able to secure meaningful concessions from China in the areas of trade, security, artificial intelligence, and human rights.
