The representative of the President of the United States engaged in a rare discussion with Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the Commander of the Sudanese Army, in Egypt. This meeting occurred as the United States and other mediators seek to end a devastating war in Sudan that has become one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world.

U.S. Efforts to Resolve the Sudan Crisis

Massad Boulus, Senior Advisor for Arab and African Affairs of the United States, announced in a tweet after the meeting that the United States, along with its Egyptian partners and other regional and international partners, is seeking to advance a political solution to this crisis. This meeting took place less than two weeks after Washington blocked the Sudanese Army commander's visa due to concerns related to a U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal that Khartoum had responded negatively to.

Dimensions of the Civil War in Sudan

The war between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary forces known as the “Rapid Support Forces” began in April 2023. These two forces have clashed over disagreements regarding the integration of their forces in the transition to a civilian government. The U.S. State Department announced last month that neither the Sudanese Army nor the Rapid Support Forces, nor any of their leaders, are legitimate representatives of the Sudanese government.

The war in Sudan has displaced over 14 million people and has been accompanied by waves of ethnic killings. Boulus also emphasized in this meeting that the United States is ready to support all efforts that lead to a comprehensive dialogue among Sudan's political forces and to help create a preliminary roadmap for Sudan's future.

At the same time, the United States has accused the Rapid Support Forces of committing crimes against humanity and the Sudanese Army of committing war crimes. Both sides have denied these accusations, and the conflict in Sudan continues.
