The midterm elections in the United States have concluded, and now Democrats are moving towards the 2028 presidential race. This election period is likely to be one of the busiest and most unpredictable contests in recent decades, reflecting deep divisions within the Democratic Party about how to return to the White House.

Intra-Party Competition Among Democrats

While none of the Democrats have emerged as a leading candidate in the race, it is likely that this competition will attract a large number of candidates. In contrast, Republicans have only a small group of known candidates, including Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Both are seeking to succeed Donald Trump, who is constitutionally barred from running for a third term.

Potential Democratic candidates, including governors and senators, have been attracting financial supporters, visiting states with early primary contests, and raising their national profiles for months. They are preparing for a competition that strategists expect to seriously begin after the midterm elections.

Implications of the Midterm Elections

The Democrats' sweeping victories on Tuesday, where voters responded negatively to Trump and his agenda, will intensify discussions in both parties about how to attract voters dissatisfied with the state of the country. Despite these victories, Democrats are still divided over whether to lean towards the center or move to the left. These divisions include issues such as healthcare, taxes, policing, and foreign policy.

Some Republican candidates face different challenges; they must distance themselves from Trump while still appealing to his base. This task will be particularly complicated for Vance, who, as Vice President, finds himself in a difficult position. He must distance himself from Trump’s policies while still defending him.

Doug Sosnik, a Democratic strategist, stated that both party factions are seeking to prove the correctness of their ideological approaches, ensuring that internal conflicts over the party's future will intensify at the start of the 2028 competition.

One significant victory for the progressive wing of the Democrats occurred in the Michigan Senate race, where Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic candidate, defeated Republican candidate Mike Rogers by a wide margin, becoming the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate.

Currently, several potential candidates, including Kamala Harris, Governors Gavin Newsom of California and Andy Beshear of Kentucky, and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, are considering running in the 2028 election.
