Mohammad Abd, a Palestinian systems engineer from Gaza, has recently immigrated to Mexico City and is trying to build a new life for himself and his family by selling traditional Palestinian food.
Journey to Mexico and a Fresh Start
Mohammad, 36, arrived in Mexico last spring with 17 family members and is currently selling Palestinian food in one of the public markets in Condesa, one of the capital's populous and multicultural neighborhoods. He says that loud noises are still anxiety-inducing for him and remind him of the Israeli bombings in Gaza that led to the death of his 4-year-old daughter.

Challenges of Immigration and New Life
While many Palestinians remain in Gaza, only a few have reached Mexico. The country has recently seen an increase in the Palestinian population, and according to official statistics, the Palestinian population in Mexico has nearly doubled since 2022. Mohammad Abd and his family have recently received permanent residency in Mexico.
Mohammad's father, Kamal Abd, immigrated to Mexico over a decade ago to escape the conflicts in Gaza. After the war in Gaza began, he tried to get his family out of the region, but he passed away before this process was completed in 2024. Mohammad's brother, Shadi, then continued the efforts and, with the help of civil organizations and asylum lawyers in Mexico, obtained travel permits for 18 family members.
Mohammad has gradually become known among his customers and uses his story to attract more clients. He also helps his wife prepare special events with Palestinian food. His younger brother, Fadi, is also selling food in Mexico City and has managed to attract 48,000 followers on Instagram with his vibrant personality.
Mohammad is still trying to bring his sisters from Gaza to Mexico, and in May, his youngest son, Yusuf, was born in Mexico City, automatically becoming a Mexican citizen. He says, "He was born in Mexico but has the roots of Gaza in his heart."
