Muscat will participate in the UNESCO Global Learning Cities Academy 2026 held in Shanghai with representatives from various institutions. This event will take place from October 11 to 18 and aims to bring together representatives from 32 learning cities across Asia, Europe, Africa, and America.

Program and Activities

In this program, representatives from learning cities including Shanghai, Beijing, Turin, Dresden, Athens, Edmonton, Medellín, Nairobi, Ankara, and Abuja will gather. Muscat's participation in this event follows a preliminary program that includes e-learning, practical activities, and knowledge exchange with other participating cities. The in-person program in Shanghai will include specialized sessions, workshops, field visits, artificial intelligence labs, and presentations from participating cities.

Muscat's Participation in Urban Health

The Muscat team includes representatives from the Muscat Governorate, Muscat Municipality, the National Commission for Education, Culture and Science of Oman, the health sector, and the local community. Muscat has also been selected to present its experience in urban health and its connection to lifelong learning in a session titled "Transforming Urban Health Through Lifelong Learning" on October 14. This session will explore initiatives that promote health awareness, healthy lifestyles, physical activity, and quality of life.

This presentation will also emphasize collaboration between the health sector, municipality, and community in promoting a healthier and more sustainable urban environment. The urban health pathway is part of the academy developed in collaboration with the World Health Organization Academy and focuses on health literacy, evidence-based urban planning, healthy lifestyles, and community-based learning.

The program will also include the 2026 International Conference on Lifelong Learning with the theme "Smart, Innovative, Inclusive" and a lifelong learning exhibition. Participants will exchange their experiences with over 100 representatives from learning cities worldwide and work on strategic action plans tailored to their cities' priorities.

The program will extend beyond the Shanghai sessions, with final action plans and follow-up support meetings scheduled until 2027 to monitor their implementation and facilitate further exchange among participating cities. For Muscat, this initiative provides an opportunity to share local experiences while benefiting from international practices in urban health, sustainability, digital transformation, community engagement, and lifelong learning.
