Nazanin Sotoudeh, a distinguished Iranian human rights lawyer, received the Vaclav Havel Human Rights Award from the European Council on Monday. This award is granted in appreciation of her sustained activities in the field of human rights. Sotoudeh, who was released from prison in May 2023, continues her work in Iran and stated in a video message: "One day, the sun of freedom will shine over our land, and perhaps one day, truth will also find its way to our country."
European Council's Recognition of Sotoudeh's Activities
The Parliamentary Assembly of the European Council (PACE), which awards this prize in memory of Czech dissident and former president Vaclav Havel, praised Sotoudeh for representing activists, journalists, minorities, and children at risk of execution. Sotoudeh has also worked against mandatory hijab laws and the death penalty, despite being repeatedly arrested and sentenced to long prison terms.

Consequences of Arrest and Human Rights Activities
Sotoudeh was arrested at her home on April 1, 2023. This arrest was part of actions that activists view as a crackdown on civil society in Iran following tensions with Israel and the United States. She was released on bail about six weeks later. This arrest followed widespread protests in Iran in January 2023, during which reports indicate that thousands lost their lives.
Nazanin Sotoudeh, who has previously received other awards such as the Sakharov Prize from the European Parliament in 2012 and the Right Livelihood Award in 2020, has been arrested multiple times for her activism. Her husband, Reza Khandan, has also been in prison in Iran since December 2024.
Sotoudeh has been working for years on the most sensitive issues in the Islamic Republic, particularly efforts to prevent the execution of minors convicted of crimes. She is also internationally recognized for several films and documentaries that depict her activities. One of these works is the film "Taxi Tehran" directed by Jafar Panahi, in which she has a brief appearance, as well as the documentary "Nazanin," released in 2020, which received a warm reception.
