Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, threatened to carry out military operations in the West Bank that would be unprecedented in scale in recent decades. This threat was made following an attack on Friday that resulted in the deaths of two Israeli soldiers near the city of Hebron, and it comes as Israel is on the verge of holding national elections.
Details of the Attack and Reactions
The attack occurred when two Palestinian men opened fire on Israeli soldiers at the Farsh al-Hawa checkpoint. Israeli forces killed the attackers following the confrontation. In response to this incident, Netanyahu stated that the soldiers prevented a larger attack with their swift response, and for this reason, he has ordered the lockdown of the West Bank area.

The Prime Minister of Israel added that military forces are conducting extensive operations to prevent terrorist activities and carry out waves of arrests. He also announced plans for a large-scale military operation that would involve evacuating residents from the area where the attackers came from and destroying terrorist infrastructure.
Pressure on the Government and Reactions from Palestinian Groups
This situation is also under political pressure within Israel. Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has called for a new military operation in the West Bank to completely destroy terrorist infrastructure and collect weapons. He also emphasized the need to dissolve the Palestinian Authority and identified this as one of the priorities of the next government.
On the other hand, Hamas, which has not claimed responsibility for the attack, described it as a "heroic operation" and urged its supporters to carry out similar actions. Hamas has also protested against recent Israeli attacks on Palestinians, considering these attacks a natural response to violent actions against the Palestinian people.
As tensions in the West Bank have escalated with recent attacks, Netanyahu is seeking to strengthen his position in the upcoming elections and has therefore canceled all political events of the Likud party. He announced that the Israeli army is ready to carry out this operation at the appropriate time.
These developments come as statistics show that since the outbreak of the Gaza war in October 2023, Israeli forces and settlers have killed 1,113 Palestinians, while at least 49 Israelis have also died in attacks by Palestinians or in Israeli military operations.
