Democrats have a good chance of winning the U.S. midterm elections on November 3. This victory could give them new power in Washington after two years of Republican control.

Limitations on Trump's Foreign Policies

Democrats argue that Republicans have allowed Donald Trump's administration to engage in war with Iran without congressional approval. Trump initiated military operations on February 28 without obtaining the necessary authorization from Congress. Democrats have repeatedly attempted to stop this war by passing resolutions, but the Trump administration has ignored these efforts.

If they control the House of Representatives or the Senate, Democrats could pressure Trump to seek congressional approval for continuing the war by reducing defense spending. They would also be able to compel government officials to testify publicly about their plans.

Impact on Military and Financial Aid

The Trump administration has largely halted financial and military aid to Ukraine while the country is fighting against the Russian invasion. This action has caused significant dissatisfaction in Congress, where both Democrats and Republicans support continued assistance to Ukraine.

A Democratic victory in both chambers could allow them to decide which issues are put to a vote. This could lead to the approval of new aid to Ukraine, which would likely pass with a two-thirds majority to override Trump's veto.

Democrats could also address other activities of Trump. For example, Gregory Meeks, a representative from New York who may chair the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has introduced a bipartisan bill to block Trump's plan to return Russian diesel to the global market.

Democratic support for Israel has significantly decreased, especially following Israel's actions in the Gaza war, which resulted in the deaths of thousands of Palestinian civilians. Ongoing violence in the West Bank and Benjamin Netanyahu's closeness to Republicans have also contributed to this decline.

Democrats may limit or even halt military aid to Israel, which reached $3.8 billion in the last fiscal year. Nearly half of the Democrats in the House voted last summer to cut aid to Israel.

Reduction of Military Spending and Revitalization of Foreign Aid

Democrats are more likely to limit military spending. Trump has requested an unprecedented 67% increase in the military budget to $1.5 trillion, but Democrats blocked this request in the Senate, citing his failure to consult with Congress regarding the war with Iran and severe cuts to social programs.

Trump has also halted or canceled billions of dollars in foreign aid approved by Congress. Many Democrats are outraged by these cuts and have stated they will seek to restore this funding.
