Cleared land from mines and unexploded ordnance has been returned to the residents of Kawe Pao village in the Pak Khlang district of Kandal province in southwestern Cambodia. This event took place after a clearance project supported by the Indian government (Quick Impact Project) during a handover ceremony on October 1.

Project Details

During this ceremony, approximately 197,810 square meters of cleared land were returned to the rural community in this coastal province near the Thai border. This project is expected to assist around 134 families in the area. The Indian Embassy stated: "The return of this land to the community will provide safe access for livelihoods, agriculture, housing, and other socio-economic activities."

Long-term Cooperation between India and Cambodia

India and Cambodia have continuously collaborated in the field of mine clearance since the beginning of humanitarian cooperation in the early 1990s. In this regard, India has provided technical assistance, empowerment and training, mine clearance equipment, and mine detection dogs, as well as support for mine victims and financial aid. These collaborations have expanded under the framework of Quick Impact Projects within the Mekong-Ganga Cooperation.

The Indian Embassy also noted that India has approved 75 Quick Impact Projects in Cambodia, of which 55 have been completed and 20 are ongoing. These projects cover priority areas such as education, health, environmental health, agriculture, women's empowerment, and humanitarian mine clearance, aligning with the developmental priorities of the Cambodian government.

Social and Economic Impacts

The handover of land in Kawe Pao village is considered a significant milestone in these efforts, returning nearly 200,000 square meters of land to the people of Cambodia for livelihoods, housing, and future developments. This initiative will not only help improve the economic situation of these families but will also contribute to building a safe and sustainable future for this community.

India and Cambodia's cooperation in mine clearance and other humanitarian activities is a testament to the deep and lasting relations between the two countries, contributing to improving the quality of life for people and sustainable development in the region.
