Saudi Arabia has canceled or postponed several international events due to increasing regional tensions and the escalating attacks by Houthi militants targeting key infrastructure across the country. These developments have intensified particularly following the deadly Houthi attacks on Riyadh International Airport last weekend, which resulted in the deaths of 13 people and injuries to over 300 others.
Houthi Attacks and Their Consequences
The recent attacks by Houthi militants on Riyadh International Airport are considered the largest and deadliest attacks in Saudi Arabia in over a decade. These attacks on the second largest airport in the country have led to its closure until at least October 17, and will have profound effects on key events and Saudi Arabia's economic plans.

Postponement of Key Events and Meetings
Following these attacks, an important meeting scheduled for October 24 in Riyadh, attended by political leaders from the European Union and Gulf Cooperation Council countries, has been postponed. This decision was made due to threats from the Houthis and the suspension of flights at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. All 27 EU leaders were expected to attend this meeting. The Gulf Cooperation Council Secretariat confirmed this postponement in a statement but did not announce a new date for the meeting.
Additionally, the Saudi Arabian Electronic Sports Federation and FIFA have decided to postpone the FIFAe 2026 finals, which were set to take place from October 16 to 25 in Jeddah. This sporting event is one of the key events in Saudi Arabia's sports calendar, and its postponement reflects the negative impacts on the country's plans to host major international events.
Saudi Arabia continues to host international events as part of its Vision 2030 program aimed at diversifying the economy and reducing dependence on oil. However, these recent developments highlight the serious challenges the country faces and could have long-term effects on its planning and economic development.
