Aviation industry officials, in response to the recent attack by the FlyDubai pilot on the captain using a sharp object, pointed to high safety standards while acknowledging the challenges posed by unpredictable pilots. This attack, which resulted in a sudden altitude drop of 16,000 feet within 30 seconds, has raised serious concerns about flight safety.

Details of the Incident and Reactions

The second pilot of the FlyDubai flight attempted to bring the aircraft down during the incident, but this effort was thwarted by the resistance of passengers and their assistance. The captain opened the cockpit door, allowing passengers to help him, and ultimately one passenger managed to stabilize the aircraft in a critical condition so that a ready pilot on board could safely land it.

Mikhail O'Leary, CEO of Ryanair Group, stated at a press conference in Brussels that "it is very difficult to legislate for an unusual person in the cockpit." These remarks reflect the difficulties in creating regulations that can fully prevent such incidents from occurring.

Investigations and Consequences

The United Arab Emirates has not yet announced any formal charges against the second pilot of the flight, and it is unclear whether he has chosen a lawyer. Additionally, Saudi Arabia has initiated an investigation into the incident. Experts are examining the dimensions of this incident and its impact on aviation safety alongside criminal investigations led by the UAE.

Carsten Spohr, CEO of Lufthansa, also stated that preventing any incident is impossible and that safety standards in the aviation industry remain high. He noted that the last similar case involving a pilot occurred more than a decade ago. In 2015, a Germanwings Airbus A320 flight crashed in the French Alps, where the second pilot deliberately directed the aircraft towards a mountain, resulting in the loss of 150 lives.

Spohr also emphasized the need to pay attention to pilots' mental health, stating that mental health screening for pilots is currently at an adequate level. This incident highlights the need to reassess the methods of evaluating and monitoring pilots' mental health to prevent similar incidents in the future.
