Senator Bernie Sanders on Monday criticized Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and a well-known billionaire, for spending $366 million to support Republicans in the United States midterm elections and accused him of trying to influence American policies. Sanders, while calling for an end to oligarchy, pointed out the increase in Musk's wealth following Donald Trump's victory in last year's election.
Criticism of Elon Musk's Political Spending
In a post shared on social media platform X, Sanders examined the connection between Musk's political spending and his wealth increase after Trump's victory, stating that despite the financial benefits Musk gained from Trump's win, he continues to spend to maintain Republican control over Congress. He wrote in the post: "Elon Musk spent $290 million to elect Trump. This investment paid off, and after Trump's election, he became $696 billion richer and the world's first trillionaire. But that's not enough for him. Now Musk is spending $366 million to maintain Republican control over Congress. Stopping Musk means stopping oligarchy."

Reactions to Musk's Campaign Spending
Musk's political spending has drawn attention ahead of the U.S. midterm elections. According to a news source, he has spent over $276 million since July, including $158 million for a special political committee (super PAC) focused on Republican Senate candidates. This spending has made him the largest donor this year. According to a spokesperson for America PAC, these significant investments have helped Republicans effectively convey their message.
Sanders' criticisms come as Elon Musk, as one of the world's wealthiest entrepreneurs, has also attracted significant attention in India. He has responded to claims that powerful business interests have hindered Starlink's entry into the country's satellite communications market. Musk addressed this issue in a post on social media platform X, stating that the company faces serious obstacles to prevent business powers from harming their interests.
The Indian Ministry of Communications disagrees with these claims and emphasizes that the country's legal framework for satellite communication services is fair and non-discriminatory. The ministry stated that all licensed operators must comply with relevant security requirements before proceeding to the next stages of the approval process. The ministry also highlighted that telecommunications licenses have been granted to three global satellite personal communication service companies based on non-geostationary technology, and security assessments for all three licenses are underway.
Musk's remarks regarding the impact of oligarchy in India contrast with the political impact of his spending in the United States. While he criticizes unspecified business interests in India, his spending of hundreds of millions of dollars to support Republican candidates and efforts to maintain Republican control over Congress has sparked further scrutiny in America. In his criticisms, Sanders points to the concentration of political power in the hands of wealthy individuals and emphasizes that Musk's increasing wealth and continued political spending highlight the influence of billionaires' wealth on the American political system.
