The U.S. trade deficit in August 2023 reached $105.6 billion, up from $92.8 billion in July, reflecting an increase of $12.7 billion. This rise in the trade deficit is due to a significant growth in imports, which outpaced the increase in exports.

Growth in Imports and Exports

Imports in August increased by 4.3% to $420.8 billion. In contrast, exports rose by 1.4% to $315.2 billion. The trade deficit in goods also increased by $12.8 billion to $136.6 billion, while the services surplus rose by less than $0.1 billion to $31 billion.

Details of Goods Imports and Exports

The increase in imports was observed across all sectors. Goods imports rose by $17.2 billion to $342.2 billion. Among these, imports of raw materials and industrial goods increased by $9.1 billion, including a $3.3 billion rise in crude oil imports and a $3.1 billion increase in non-monetary gold imports. Additionally, imports of capital goods also rose by $6.2 billion.

Goods exports also increased by $4.4 billion to $205.7 billion. A significant portion of this increase is attributed to exports of raw materials and industrial goods, which rose by $6.3 billion. Furthermore, exports of capital goods increased by $1.3 billion, influenced by exports of semiconductors and other industrial machinery.

Despite the increase in the trade deficit in August, the cumulative trade deficit for the current year up to the end of August has decreased compared to the same period in 2022. The cumulative deficit in goods and services has decreased by $138.2 billion, equivalent to a 19.9% reduction, while during this period, exports increased by 11.8% and imports by 4.4%.

According to quarterly statistics, the average trade deficit for the three months ending in August increased by $9.9 billion to $89.9 billion. During this period, the average exports decreased by $1.6 billion to $314.4 billion, while the average imports increased by $8.3 billion to $404.3 billion.

Based on country statistics, the United States recorded its largest trade deficit in August with Mexico ($27.7 billion), Vietnam ($24 billion), Taiwan ($18.3 billion), and China ($16.4 billion). The trade deficit with India was also $6.2 billion.
