Simon Richardson, 35, was convicted of murder for driving towards a cyclist and dragging him under his car for over a mile. The incident occurred at the Warburton intersection on the Manchester motorway when Richardson drove his Volvo XC90 towards 56-year-old Michael Malins.
Details of the Incident
Malins, who was a school principal, was returning home from Stratford Grammar School when he was struck. After the collision, he fell onto the hood and windshield of the car and was then dragged underneath it. Richardson continued driving towards a remote farm track on Whetgate Lane, 1.3 miles away.

Consequences and Reactions
Prosecutors stated that Richardson was aware that Malins was trapped under the car. He even briefly considered doing the right thing and helping Malins, but ultimately decided to flee. Richardson and his passenger, his cousin Gabrielle Debout, heard Malins' moans, and he clearly said, "He is under the car." After unsuccessful attempts to free Malins, he returned to the vehicle and drove it erratically left and right.
Malins was eventually freed but was again trapped under the car during Richardson's retreat. A motorcyclist followed blood from the street and found Malins severely injured. Emergency services attempted to save him, but unfortunately, he succumbed to multiple injuries.
Richardson was arrested the next day after a police vehicle pursuit and was charged with murder. He claimed he was unaware of Malins being under the car and could not exit the vehicle. The jury, after reviewing the evidence and claims, ultimately ruled in favor of his conviction.
Malins' family stated, "He was very devoted to his family, and our lives will never be the same. There is a void in our hearts and in his role as the principal of Stratford School."
