Tensions between the ruling parties in Turkey and Azerbaijan, one of its closest regional allies, escalated sharply on Tuesday. These tensions have arisen due to the effective ban on Islamic attire for students and teachers in Azerbaijan's public schools, while protests against these laws continue in this wealthy country.

Criticism of Turkish President's Advisor's Statements

The New Azerbaijan Party (YAP), led by the country's powerful president, Ilham Aliyev, strongly reacted to the remarks of Oktay Saral, a senior advisor to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. In statements posted on social media, Saral described the hijab as "a religious obligation" and urged Baku to "correct this mistake as soon as possible."

These remarks came after widespread reactions from Islamic activists in Turkey due to the release of videos showing Azerbaijani schoolgirls and their parents protesting these changes. These changes were implemented through a government decree in mid-September, with similar restrictions for teachers imposed from October 6. In his post on October 12, Saral stated: "The right to education should not be sacrificed for any ideological imposition" and called the action "unacceptable." This issue has become a turning point in the relations between the two countries.

Reaction from the New Azerbaijan Party

The New Azerbaijan Party has stated that it has so far controlled itself in the face of these tensions to ensure that "the historical bonds of friendship that unite the people of Azerbaijan and Turkey are not harmed." However, the party's statement continues: "However, the recent escalation of this information campaign, which clearly attacks Azerbaijan, especially involving a person in the position of senior advisor to the Turkish President and members of parliament from the Justice and Development Party of Turkey in this matter, has forced us to publicly declare our position."

The party has warned that if these criticisms do not stop, bilateral relations will be affected. These tensions not only impact the relations between the two countries but could also influence the social and political situation in Azerbaijan.

Meanwhile, protests in Azerbaijan and Turkey's reactions to this issue highlight the complexities of the relations between these two countries and the need for careful and diplomatic management of these tensions. Given that Azerbaijan is recognized as a country with rich energy resources, the implications of this crisis for regional security and stability must also be considered.
