The Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) of Morocco, which received the most votes in last month's parliamentary elections, has reached an agreement with three other parties to form a coalition government. This coalition, which includes moderate socialist parties and the nationalist Independence Party, holds a total of 207 seats in parliament, surpassing the 198 seats needed for a majority.
First Woman in the Position of Prime Minister
The King of Morocco has appointed Fatima Zahra Al-Mansouri, the leader of the PAM, as the first woman in the history of the country to hold the position of Head of Government. She will be responsible for forming the cabinet after securing the top rank in the elections on September 23. The PAM, established in 2008, is recognized as an opposition force against the Justice and Development Party and aims to promote social modernization in the country.
Challenges Ahead
The new government faces serious challenges, including addressing the grievances of youth regarding employment, education, and healthcare services. These grievances led to protests by Generation Z and a migration crisis in the city of Ceuta in July last year. The new coalition government will also be responsible for overseeing the final stages of a $20 billion project in preparation for the 2030 World Cup, which Morocco will host along with Portugal and Spain.
However, significant changes in the country's policies are not expected, as Morocco is a constitutional monarchy and the king still holds extensive powers in foreign policy, defense, and other key areas.
