The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, met with the President of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, in Moscow on Tuesday. This meeting took place on the sidelines of the eighth Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), which brought together leaders from major gas-exporting countries to discuss global gas markets and energy cooperation.

Expansion of Political and Economic Relations

During this meeting, Sheikh Tamim and Pezeshkian emphasized the expansion of political and economic relations. The two sides examined energy and trade cooperation and stressed the need for coordination among gas-producing countries. This issue is particularly important in the current context, where the global energy market is affected by various developments.

The Emir of Qatar arrived in Moscow on Monday to participate in the GECF meeting. This forum serves as a platform for dialogue on energy cooperation and global gas markets. Additionally, Qatar's Minister of Energy and the CEO of Qatar Energy, Saad Sherida Al Kaabi, also met with Iran's caretaker Minister of Oil, Hamid Bourd, in Moscow on Tuesday.

Emphasis on Energy Security and Investment

In this meeting, discussions focused on energy relations and cooperation between Qatar and Iran. Al Kaabi also engaged in separate meetings with the energy ministers of Algeria, Libya, Senegal, and Venezuela to discuss bilateral energy cooperation.

During the GECF ministerial meeting, Al Kaabi stressed the need to protect energy infrastructure and maritime routes during times of crisis. He warned that disruptions in the Persian Gulf could have widespread implications for global trade and energy security, referencing recent attacks on energy facilities and maritime restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz.

Al Kaabi also reiterated Qatar's commitment to sustainable energy supply, particularly liquefied natural gas (LNG), stating that the country aims to be a "force for peace" and continue its active role in global energy markets. He also highlighted the necessity of ongoing investment in the natural gas supply chain and emphasized the importance of equitable access to financing and long-term cooperation between producers and consumers.

Finally, Al Kaabi noted that natural gas is a key component of a diverse global energy mix and balanced energy transition, asserting that "natural gas will remain for a long time."
