In his analysis of the Republican failure in the U.S. midterm elections, Vice President JD Vance referred to the impact of the Iran war and its repercussions on the elections. He stated that this war, along with economic issues and changes in the principles of 'America First' and U.S. relations with Israel, was the main factor behind the Republican Party's failure in this election.

Trump's Role in Shaping Strategy

Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, announced on election day, November 3, to preempt Democratic criticism, that he and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had agreed months earlier that U.S. aid to Israel would end by the end of 2026. Trump described this decision as a weakness for the Democrats.

In response to Vance's comments about the Iran war, Trump stated: "This is largely true as it temporarily raised gas prices." He emphasized that he has no regrets because in the long run, this may be the only possible solution. He added: "You cannot allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon."

New Opportunities for Diplomacy

However, the impact of the Iran war on the elections should not overlook the urgency and opportunities available to address Iran's nuclear program. Trump seems to be on the verge of a significant breakthrough. Achieving an agreement with Iran could reduce the existing partisan tensions regarding Iran; as Democrats and anti-war Republicans would face difficulties opposing an agreement, especially if announced before the new Congress convenes in January.

Moreover, establishing an acceptable framework for negotiations could be a significant step towards a historic advancement of the government in integrating economic and energy ties between the Gulf and the Levant. Such a development could greatly contribute to stability in Gaza, Lebanon, and across the region.
