The President of the United States, Donald Trump, resorted to war with the aim of regime change in Iran. However, instead, his control over Washington weakened due to voter dissatisfaction with the war and rising fuel prices, and the Democrats gained control of Congress.

A Tough Choice for Trump

This situation has confronted the weakened President with a difficult choice: to exit the crisis through negotiation or to escalate tensions. In Tehran and among its allies, this outcome was quickly interpreted as a verdict on the strained relations. Officials in the Gulf states are watching these changes with concern.

One source close to an American ally in the Gulf said, "Iran has succeeded in regime change in America." He added that officials in the Gulf states were surprised by the extent of the Democrats' victory in the midterm elections.

Military and Diplomatic Consequences

The war that began with U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran led to missile retaliation and drone attacks by Iran on Gulf and Strait of Hormuz targets, disrupting global energy supplies. The U.S. and Israeli campaign severely weakened Iran's military capabilities but failed to achieve a decisive outcome, and the issue of Iran's nuclear program remains unresolved.

Now, Trump faces more limitations in military options against a Democratic Congress and seems to have greater motivation to reach an agreement. Some Gulf analysts warn that an agreement that allows Iran a clear victory could push Trump towards performative actions.

Currently, analysts believe that any agreement that disregards freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz or allows Iran to impose political conditions on transportation could lead to another crisis.

Iranian leaders were pleased with Trump's victory in the elections but did not back down from their position. Iran's Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, warned against "even a slight willingness to surrender," indicating Iran's unwillingness to soften its demands, especially regarding the Strait of Hormuz.
