The Netherlands has recently responded to recent developments in this international event by announcing its return to the Eurovision 2027 competition. The country's public broadcaster, NPO, has stated that an independent team of experts will carefully oversee the process of selecting the Netherlands' representative.

Changes in the organization of the competition

In August, AVROTROS, which was responsible for selecting the Netherlands' representative and broadcasting the event, withdrew from the competition due to the current situation in Gaza, stating that the event is no longer considered "neutral." Following this withdrawal, NPO emphasized that it has requested the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) to implement changes to the Eurovision rules in order to maintain the unifying characteristics of this festival.

NPO's response and the importance of Eurovision

NPO's media director, Jur Hoesman, stated: "It is important that as a public broadcaster, we remain a unifying force in this European event, especially at this point in time." He also pointed out that this competition has generated mixed feelings in the Netherlands, but NPO has clearly asked the EBU to refocus on the unifying values of the competition.

The Eurovision competition, as the largest live television music event in the world, will take place on May 15 in the city of Burgas, located on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria. This will be the first time Bulgaria hosts this competition, which follows Darina Yotova, known as Dara, winning this year's contest in Vienna.

Since its inception in 1955, the Eurovision competition has become one of the prominent platforms for pop music, bringing global fame to artists such as ABBA, Celine Dion, and Olivia Newton-John. In 2026, the competition experienced a decline of 35 million viewers compared to the previous year, with 131 million viewers, while five countries boycotted the event due to Israel's participation.

The Netherlands has been one of the first participants in the Eurovision competition since 1956 and has won this competition five times. The country's last victory was with Duncan Laurence and the song "Arcade," which achieved global success in 2019 and was the first Eurovision entry to reach one billion streams on Spotify.
