The Sultanate of Oman, representing the Environment Authority, participated on Monday in the 28th meeting of the Ministers Responsible for Environmental Affairs of the Gulf Cooperation Council held in Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain. This meeting was led by Dr. Abdullah bin Ali Al-Amri, President of the Environment Authority of Oman.

Review of the 2030 Action Plan and Environmental Performance Index Project

During this meeting, the environment ministers reviewed the 2030 action plan established by the committee of ministers responsible for environmental affairs of the Gulf Cooperation Council. This plan serves as a roadmap for future cooperation in environmental matters in the region. Additionally, a project to create an environmental performance index for the Gulf Cooperation Council was discussed, aimed at assessing and monitoring the environmental status of member countries.

Wildlife Conservation and Biodiversity

Furthermore, the ministers addressed important issues regarding wildlife conservation and biodiversity and reviewed the Middle East Green Initiative (MGI). This initiative is designed to promote regional cooperation in environmental protection and to tackle environmental challenges. The Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the Gulf Cooperation Council agreement on wildlife conservation and natural habitats were also highlighted during this meeting.

In addition, the meeting examined several international environmental cases, including the eighth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly and the coordination mechanism of the Gulf Cooperation Council in international negotiations to develop a legally binding instrument on plastic pollution. These topics are particularly significant given the current situation where plastic pollution has become one of the main environmental challenges.

Issues related to carbon emissions in the marine sector and proactive monitoring of international environmental matters were also discussed at this meeting. The environment ministers emphasized the need for closer cooperation and better coordination among member countries to address environmental challenges.

In conclusion, this meeting is considered an important step towards strengthening regional cooperation in environmental matters and addressing common challenges in this field. Given the increasing importance of environmental issues, this meeting could help solidify international and regional cooperation in this area.
