The Sultanate of Oman is preparing to participate in the 31st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP31), which will be held from November 9 to 20 in Antalya, Republic of Turkey.

Importance of COP31 Conference

Oman's participation in this conference, which is one of the most prominent international forums related to climate action, comes at a time when global efforts are focused on accelerating the implementation of climate commitments and increasing the transition to clean energy. This event also addresses the development of a circular economy, green production, and climate financing, as well as strengthening infrastructure and ecosystems to combat the impacts of climate change.

National Preparations and Achievements

The Oman Environment Agency is working to enhance national readiness for participation in this conference through coordination in monitoring, governance, media, and logistical support teams. These efforts will help integrate initiatives and highlight Oman's national and climate priorities in the conference sessions.

Oman's participation in this conference is based on a set of environmental indicators and achievements, including Oman's progress in the Global Environmental Performance Index for 2026, which has improved to rank 49th globally. Oman has also achieved the first global rank in 6 sub-indicators, including waste management and reduction of sulfur dioxide emissions.

Development in the circular economy and waste management is also notable; the volume of recycled municipal waste has reached 1.77 million tons, and the number of recycling plants has increased to 85.

Oman is also active in blue carbon projects aimed at planting 100 million mangrove trees over an area of 20,000 hectares. These efforts will help reduce nearly 14 million tons of carbon dioxide and are aimed at empowering coastal ecosystems to absorb greenhouse gases.

Oman's participation in COP31 will be an opportunity to showcase national experiences in environmental sustainability, green economy, and biodiversity conservation. This will contribute to strengthening international cooperation and the exchange of knowledge and technologies, ultimately supporting Oman's climate commitments and national priorities.
