The United States and Iran have engaged in discussions on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, which according to President Donald Trump, marks the first official meeting in recent months between officials of the two countries. In his speech in New York, Trump referred to the threat posed by Iran with severe consequences while also mentioning the possibility of reaching a positive agreement.

US-Iran Talks

President Trump noted in his speech that "a big decision must be made" and asked whether an agreement with Iran would allow the country to rebuild and create a larger nation or if the Islamic Republic would face severe consequences. These remarks were made as most members of the Iranian delegation present at the meeting left the hall.

Trump also indicated that he expects Iran to reach an agreement after the midterm elections in November. These elections could lead to a reduction in Republican control over Congress, which is itself a result of the negative impact of the war with Iran on the US economy. However, just a few hours after these remarks, the President announced that representatives from the United States and Iran had engaged in dialogue on the sidelines of the General Assembly, which lasted for three hours.

Details of the Talks and Their Implications

Trump clarified that Steve Witkoff, his business associate and special advisor, and Jared Kushner, his son-in-law, were present in these negotiations, and he expressed satisfaction with the outcome of this meeting, stating: "This meeting was very positive, and another meeting is scheduled for the near future."

This meeting is considered the first in-person encounter between Iranian and American officials since the meeting of US Vice President J.D. Vance with senior officials in Tehran in Switzerland in June. Trump also referred in this speech to the ongoing war in Ukraine and emphasized the need for cooperation with Russia and Ukraine to end this crisis.

Following this speech, Trump signed a security agreement with Greenland and Denmark, under which the United States will establish two military bases in Greenland and prevent the military presence of non-NATO countries on the island.

Additionally, President Trump addressed the threat of Iran's nuclear program in an aggressive tone, claiming that Iran should not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons. This comes at a time when Trump had previously promised that the war with Iran would end within four to five weeks, but now this war is approaching its sixth month, and the situation has become extremely complicated.
