On Monday, the United States announced new sanctions targeting Russia's VTB Bank for allegedly helping Tehran evade American restrictions and transferring billions of dollars from Iranian assets. This financial institution had previously been placed under comprehensive sanctions in 2022 due to escalating conflicts in Ukraine.
Details of the Sanctions
The U.S. Treasury Department announced that the new sanctions focus on VTB's operational relationships with Iran. The bank has been accused of establishing correspondent relationships with sanctioned Iranian banks. Additionally, Washington has warned global banking institutions to refrain from establishing business relationships with this Russian financial entity and has strongly recommended cutting all communications.

Messages from the United States
The U.S. State Department noted that VTB has established physical branches in Iran and has engaged in financial communications with sanctioned Iranian entities, and "has sought to transfer billions of dollars of Iranian assets." The department emphasized: "The United States insists on continuing to cut off the financial resources that allow the Iranian regime to finance terrorism and threaten regional stability."
Officials also added that this action serves as a serious warning to countries and financial institutions considering similar partnerships. The State Department stated: "Any efforts to assist Iran in evading sanctions will have serious consequences, including exposure to U.S. financial restrictions."
VTB Bank is one of the largest Russian financial institutions, which was sanctioned by Washington following the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. At that time, the Treasury Department described the bank as "one of the largest financial entities ever sanctioned."
These actions are part of a broad American campaign to intensify economic restrictions on Iran. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bastant described this initiative as "Economic D-Day" and Washington is also focusing on foreign entities such as Turkey's Golden Global Bank.
The State Department emphasized that the United States will continue to employ diplomatic and economic tools to isolate Tehran and has urged its international partners to cooperate in efforts to "cut off the financial resources" of the Iranian regime.
