Dr. Rifai's Role in the Tourism Industry
The WTTC Icon Award is given to individuals who have made significant impacts on destinations, institutions, or the tourism industry throughout their lives. Dr. Rifai, as Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization from 2010 to 2017, transformed the relationships between the public and private sectors and helped bring business leaders closer to the heart of international tourism policy-making.
One of the most important examples of this collaboration was the Open Letter on Tourism initiative and the Golden Book, which brought together government leaders and industry executives to promote travel and tourism as a driver for employment, growth, and prosperity. This initiative is a prime example of how governments and the private sector can work together to advance global tourism goals.
By promoting tourism as a force for peace, understanding, and cultural exchange, Dr. Rifai inspired policymakers and industry leaders and helped create a stronger and more unified voice for the sector.
Gloria Guevara, President and CEO of WTTC, said: "Dr. Taleb Rifai has been one of the greatest advocates for the travel and tourism industry and one of WTTC's strongest partners. He understood that the future of this sector depends on the collaboration of governments and businesses and dedicated his entire life to realizing this partnership."
Throughout a career that includes government activities, international organizations, and global advocacy, Dr. Rifai has helped establish tourism and travel as a key factor in global economies and communities. This award reflects his unwavering commitment to the sector and his lasting legacy as one of the world's respected leaders in this field.
