Ken McCallum, the head of MI5 Britain, in his annual speech on October 13, addressed the existing security threats in the country. In this speech, he emphasized the threats posed by hostile governments, particularly Iran and Russia, as well as the challenges arising from advancements in artificial intelligence technology.

Russia: The Number One Aggressor

McCallum introduced Russia as the "number one aggressor" in this speech and noted that this country is continuously increasing its hybrid warfare activities without crossing a threshold that would provoke a direct NATO response. He stated that Russia's capabilities have diminished due to the expulsion of 1,000 diplomats from its embassies and is now forced to rely on local volunteers and criminal intermediaries.

This British official emphasized that Iran also uses criminal intermediaries to target opponents and Iranian media organizations in Britain and has expanded its hybrid campaigns over the past year. He announced that operations related to Iran have led to over 50 arrests in Britain, many of which were directed at the Jewish community.

Challenges from Artificial Intelligence

McCallum referred to new challenges arising from the development of artificial intelligence in the field of cybersecurity. He stated that artificial intelligence is increasing the intensity of competition between attackers and cyber defenders and facilitating the production of propaganda and targeted materials for individuals. MI5 has also identified potential attackers' efforts to improve identification and attack methods using artificial intelligence technologies.

The head of MI5 also mentioned serious concerns about the misuse of artificial intelligence by terrorists, stating that there is a risk that they may develop biological weapons or even create new pathogens. He added, "Human history has no experience of dealing with agents that are smarter than us."

Britain raised its national terrorism threat level to "severe" in April, meaning an attack is highly likely in the next six months. McCallum also referred to the activities of al-Qaeda and ISIS, which continue to inspire terrorist plots, and MI5 is still responding to efforts to carry out high-casualty attacks.

He also pointed to concerning trends that have seen a rise in severe anti-immigration and anti-Muslim grievances leading to terrorist intentions over the past year. An investigation into a 13-year-old who had been influenced by far-right extremist ideologies led to the prevention of a deadly attack on the territory of a foreign partner.

In conclusion, McCallum referred to Russia's interference in the 2016 UK referendum on leaving the European Union, stating that Russian media such as RT were highly active during the voting and confirmed that there were activities from trolls and bots as well.
