The Houthis are capturing strategic heights in Yemen that could cut off access to the Red Sea coasts for Saudi-backed forces. These changes come after Donald Trump's sudden decision, the President of the United States, to cancel airstrikes against the Houthis at the last minute before the attacks were to begin.

Escalation of Conflicts and Humanitarian Consequences

In recent days, intense clashes have continued in Yemen, leading to the displacement of tens of thousands of people. According to reports, since the beginning of September, at least 125,000 people in Yemen have been forced to leave their homes due to the war and conflicts. The city of Taiz, hosting up to 86,000 displaced persons, has seen the highest number of refugees.

Changes in U.S. Policies and Pressure on Trump

The Trump administration has undergone significant changes in its policies in recent days due to Saudi Arabia's request for attacks on the Houthis. Trump did not confirm military support for the Yemeni government during a recent meeting with Rashad Al-Alimi, the President of Yemen. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has conducted hundreds of airstrikes against Houthi positions in the strategic Qabbah Mountains in recent days, but these attacks have had little impact on the Houthi advances.

The Houthi advance towards sensitive areas near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which Saudi Arabia uses as an alternative route for oil exports, could escalate tensions in the region and jeopardize global energy supplies. Trump has made contradictory statements regarding the Houthis and recently mentioned to reporters in Ireland that the Houthis do not wish to fight the United States and that the situation in Bab el-Mandeb is currently going well.

These developments have not only added to the complexities of the war in Yemen but have also increased pressure on Trump to act regarding his closest allies in the Gulf, especially Saudi Arabia. Nevertheless, Trump is acting cautiously to prevent further escalation of the conflict in Yemen and its consequences for his domestic and international policies.
