The Izmir court in Turkey has sentenced 16 people to prison due to recent government attacks on LGBTQ+ groups in the province. This decision was made following a large-scale operation called 'My Family is Safe', during which 18 people were arrested and 2 others were placed under judicial supervision.

The Izmir Prosecutor's Office announced that under this operation, 16 people were transferred to prison and 2 others are under judicial supervision. Turkey's Minister of Justice, Akın Gürlek, also stated that these investigations are coordinated with prosecutors from the provinces of Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Aydın, and Mersin, and involve 162 suspects, 9 associations, and 13 businesses across 15 provinces.

The Turkish government has stated that the aim of this operation is to protect children and family values. Over the past weekend, 26 people were arrested in Istanbul and 21 in Ankara, and the offices of several LGBTQ+ associations were also searched.
Criticism and Reactions
Human rights groups accuse the government of increasingly attacking the LGBTQ+ community and disregarding the rights of these individuals through rhetoric, restrictions, and legal measures. The Turkish Human Rights Association has described this operation as "state discrimination, a policy of fear, and the destruction of civil society."
Nacho Sánchez Amor, the European Parliament's rapporteur on Turkey, has called these arrests a "shocking escalation" of repression and raised concerns about the impact of these actions on society and human rights.
Prosecutors have stated that these investigations include charges related to prostitution and indecency, claiming that children and adolescents have been inappropriately influenced by issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity.
This operation coincides with the promotion of the 'Decade of Family and Population' by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, aimed at addressing declining birth rates and an aging population in Turkey.
