The U.S. midterm elections are approaching their final stage on Tuesday, while early and mail-in voting is underway. These elections are recognized as a test for President Donald Trump and his Republican Party, providing an opportunity for Democrats to reclaim legislative control amid severe political divisions.
Impact of the Elections on Congress
These elections will determine the balance of power in Congress during the last two years of Trump's presidency and will affect his ability to pass legislation, approve budgets, and implement policies. Significant attention is focused on the states of Alaska, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, North Carolina, Ohio, and Texas, where close Senate races could determine control of Congress.

Political and Economic Situation
The Republican Party holds a stronger position with 53 Senate seats against 47 seats for Democrats and allied independents. Democrats need at least four additional seats to change the current majority. Meanwhile, due to economic pressures and rising living costs, Democrats appear better prepared than before to reclaim the House of Representatives. These races are mainly concentrated in competitive districts in Virginia, Florida, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York.
However, gaining the Senate seems more challenging for Democrats, as they need to win competitive seats and defend vulnerable incumbents. Youth and minority community turnout is expected to have a significant impact on the results in several close electoral fields.
Impact on Trump's Political Future
Voters are paying attention to economic conditions, inflation, living costs, immigration, and trade policies. If Democrats reclaim the House of Representatives, the passage of laws and budgets may be challenged, and they could gain control of key committees that enable investigations and the possibility of impeachment. Control of the Senate would also allow Democrats to block or delay government and judicial appointments and strengthen oversight of the White House.
The results of these elections will also reflect voter sentiments ahead of the 2028 presidential elections; however, continued Republican control of both chambers would allow Trump to continue his policies and advance government and judicial appointments.
