The U.S. representative, Massad Boulos, participated in an event in Egypt with Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the commander of the Sudanese army, who is at war with militia forces. This crisis has created one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world.

Emphasis on Political Cooperation

Massad Boulos, senior advisor to the U.S. President on Arab and African affairs, announced on the social media platform X that he attended a lunch hosted by Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the President of Egypt. Boulos emphasized in this post: "We reaffirm the ongoing efforts of the United States alongside Egyptian partners and other regional and international partners to advance a political solution to the current crisis."

Details of the Meeting and Current Situation

A senior official in the Sudanese military government announced that al-Burhan and Boulos had only an "informal meeting" and no discussions took place between them. This event in Egypt occurred less than two weeks after Washington revoked the Sudanese army commander's visa before a scheduled appearance at the United Nations. This action was reportedly related to a U.S.-backed ceasefire plan that Khartoum has not responded positively to.

Since April 2023, the Sudanese army has been battling the militia forces known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The two military forces have gradually disagreed over issues such as how to integrate forces into a planned transition to civilian rule. The U.S. State Department announced last month that neither the Sudanese army nor the Rapid Support Forces have any of their leaders as a "representative of a legitimate and legal government for Sudan."

This war has displaced over 14 million people and sparked waves of ethnic killings. Boulos further stated: "The United States is ready to support any efforts that lead to an inclusive dialogue among Sudanese political forces and result in a preliminary roadmap for the future of Sudan."

Washington has accused the RSF of committing genocide and the army of committing war crimes. Both sides have previously responded negatively to allegations of human rights violations.
