The Trump administration, led by President Donald Trump, has begun planning to repatriate some Afghan migrants to Afghanistan. This announcement comes as many of these individuals have sought refuge in the U.S. following the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan and the withdrawal of American forces from the country.
Details of the Afghan Migrant Return Program
Shawn VanDeWeyer, head of an organization made up of veterans and human rights advocacy groups, stated that some of these migrants are children and siblings of individuals who served alongside American forces, and the Taliban will target these families for various reasons, including revenge.

According to reports, over 150 Afghan migrants are set to be repatriated soon, making this one of the largest deportations of Afghan migrants. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has detained some of these migrants in Louisiana and plans for the first flight to take place on Monday.
Human Rights Challenges and Consequences
A U.S. government official announced that these deportations will be carried out through Pakistan, as Washington cannot directly deport to Afghanistan due to the lack of diplomatic relations with the Taliban. Trump has stated that strict measures against immigration and deportations are being implemented to enhance domestic security in the U.S.
However, human rights advocates believe that these actions harm individuals' legal rights and freedom of expression, creating an unsafe environment for minorities. They have expressed concerns about racial profiling and potential discrimination.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has stated that it cannot confirm future return operations due to operational security issues. VanDeWeyer has also urged Congress to pass legislation granting temporary protected status to Afghans in the U.S. to prevent their deportation.
On the other hand, Pakistan has repatriated over 2 million Afghan nationals to Afghanistan since 2023.
