Israeli militarism in the village of Deir Nizam located in the West Bank on Wednesday, September 23, resulted in the destruction of Palestinian olive trees. This action took place before the annual olive harvest season, which is usually a source of joy for Palestinians, raising concerns among Palestinian farmers.

Destruction of Olive Trees and Expression of Despair

Abdul Fattah Tamimi, one of the olive grove owners in the area, witnessed the destruction of his trees and expressed: "All our olive trees, including newly planted ones, were uprooted. The trees of our neighbors also suffered the same fate." Tamimi stated that he and his neighbors have about 9 acres of farmland filled with olive trees.

Following this action, the Israeli military announced that it is reviewing the request for comment, but had not provided a response by Wednesday evening. In the past, these forces have indicated their objective for destroying olive trees, which is to prevent security threats and ambushes on their forces.

Economic and Social Consequences

Palestinian human rights groups have rejected these justifications, believing that these actions effectively deprive Palestinian farmers of income from the sale of olives and olive oil, and uproot trees that symbolize their connection to the land. The olive harvest season typically begins in the first week of October, and olives are recognized as the backbone of Palestinian agriculture, accounting for about 8 percent of GDP and providing over 60,000 jobs.

Activists and Palestinian farmers expect that this year's harvest will be particularly unstable and tense due to the increase in attacks by Israeli settlers on Palestinians and their resources.

Nasser Tamimi, another landowner near the village of Deir Nizam, stated that losing olive trees just before the harvest season is especially painful. He said: "From this land, my brothers and I produce 120 barrels of olive oil. Our neighbors do the same."

Tamimi added: "They have uprooted trees everywhere, even between houses."
