Argentine President Javier Milei will discuss topics related to the escalating tensions with Britain regarding the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) at the UN General Assembly on Wednesday. These islands, considered a self-governing territory under British sovereignty, have always been claimed by Argentina, and tensions have increased due to oil explorations in the area.

Recent Developments in Argentina-Britain Tensions

Argentina has begun punitive actions against over 60 companies and individuals linked to oil drilling projects in waters near the Falkland Islands earlier this month. This move has faced strong reactions from British officials. For instance, Uma Kumaran, the UK Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Overseas Territories, called the Argentine actions "unacceptable" and emphasized that "the Falkland Islands belong to Britain, and they have the right to develop their natural resources as they see fit."

Milei's Speech and Its Implications

Analysts believe that Milei will continue to emphasize Argentina's actions in his speech at the UN. Meanwhile, he will meet with Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel and his close ally, on Thursday. The oil drilling projects in the Falklands have strong connections with Israel. Argentina's claim of sovereignty over the Falkland Islands is part of the national identity of the country. Argentina invaded these islands in 1982, leading to a 10-week war that ended with Argentina's surrender to Britain, and it is still commemorated in Buenos Aires with murals honoring the fallen soldiers.

In a televised speech, Milei pointed out that the oil drilling project contradicts the UN General Assembly resolution of 1976, which calls for resolving sovereignty disputes through dialogue and preventing unilateral decisions. This speech came at a time when former US President Donald Trump, a supporter of Milei, suggested that Washington could reconsider its position on the Falkland disputes.

Milei's hardline stance represents a significant shift in the approach of Argentina's new president, who had been criticized for not paying enough attention to the sovereignty dispute with Britain and for pursuing closer relations with the United States and Europe. Now, Milei's opponents accuse him of using this dispute to bolster domestic support. A congressman from the Peronist party, Guillermo Michel, stated that this issue is aimed at drawing public attention and changing the social agenda.

However, a study conducted by a Buenos Aires-based consulting firm, Inteligencia Analytica, shows that Milei's televised speech has only led to a modest improvement in his public image. Marcelo Escolar, the director of the firm, stated: "The Malvinas issue in Argentina goes beyond the president's speech."

Last week, Milei introduced a bill aimed at tightening sanctions against individuals who illegally participate in activities related to the use of natural resources in Argentina's maritime and continental shelf. This bill will first be referred to a committee to review the government's legislative priorities.

Although Milei does not have a majority in Congress, he has managed to pass significant economic reforms. Marcelo Sghini, a defense advisor in the House of Representatives, stated that while some sections of the sovereignty bill may have bipartisan support, other provisions unrelated to the Falkland dispute may face opposition.

The owners of the Sea Lion marine project, Navitas Petroleum and Rockhopper Exploration, have stated that they do not expect Milei's actions to disrupt the development of this project.
