Anne Carson, the prominent Canadian poet and writer, has won the Nobel Prize in Literature 2026. This award was given to her "for her bold and innovative works that create new forms for contemporary literature in a playful dialogue with the classical tradition."

Nobel Prize and its Value

The Nobel Prize in Literature, awarded by the Swedish Academy, is valued at 12 million Swedish kronor (approximately 1.2 million dollars). Anne Carson is currently in Iceland and is reportedly very surprised by this news. This information was announced by Ingrid Carlberg, the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy.

Style and Works of Anne Carson

Anne Carson's works typically include a combination of poetry, prose, dialogue, and translation that transcends traditional genres. She was born in Toronto and has held Icelandic citizenship since 2022. Carson is known for her translations of classical Greek literature, a body of work that has had a profound impact on her other writings, from her opera Libretto to literary criticism and poetic novels such as "Autobiography of Red," published in 1998.

The Swedish Academy stated: "Almost all of her literary output revolves around the intersection of linguists' obsession with poets' passion for new meaning." Carson herself identifies the etymology of words as the starting point of all her works. Her translations from classical Greece may be considered independent works.

Carson's style is well illustrated in her work "Norma Jeane Baker of Troy," published in 2019. This dramatic piece combines the stories of Helen of Troy from Euripides' play "Helen" with Marilyn Monroe.

At 76, Carson was one of the leading candidates for this award this year, joining prominent figures such as Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Alice Munro, and Ernest Hemingway as winners of this prize. The Swedish Academy has faced significant criticism for overlooking some literary giants over the past 120 years.

The Nobel Prize, established in the will of Swedish inventor and businessman Alfred Nobel, has been awarded since 1901 for achievements in literature, science, and peace. Last year's prize was awarded to Hungarian writer László Krasznahorkai, who was dubbed the "master of the apocalyptic" by American critic Susan Sontag.
