Jio Platforms, Mukesh Ambani's digital services arm, successfully achieved complete investment within two hours of the start of its initial public offering (IPO). This IPO, expected to be the largest listing in India's history, aims to raise up to $3.2 billion this year.

Notable Statistics

According to BSE data, the number of investment bids exceeded 197.5 million shares offered just 100 minutes after the start of the offering. Local media described this event as the "fastest recorded IPO" in India's history. Analysts believe that despite the weak performance of the Indian stock market this year, Jio Platforms' shares are expected to grow at the time of the offering in Mumbai, likely on October 28.

Future Developments

Jio Platforms, which has significantly impacted the market over the past decade, has attracted many customers from competitors like Bharti Airtel and Vodafone by offering substantial discounts. Analysts at Motilal Oswal Financial Services stated that Jio Platforms' 533 million subscribers provide a strong foundation for the company's future growth. However, they warned that the company has yet to demonstrate that it can widely profit from new digital services.

This IPO, which has been in preparation for seven years, takes place under challenging conditions for Reliance, the most valuable listed company in India. Reliance remains heavily dependent on its oil business. Last year, Peter Navarro, a White House advisor, accused Indian traders of profiting from the Ukraine war by buying discounted Russian crude oil, an accusation widely attributed to Ambani.

This year, Ambani, by supporting the construction of the first large oil refinery in the U.S. in half a century, seems to indicate a sign of closer energy cooperation with the United States. He is expected to meet with Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State, on Wednesday at Jamnagar, the site of Reliance's largest refinery complex.

Experts believe that Jio Platforms plays a central role in Reliance's strategy to reduce its dependence on oil. While most of the company's revenue comes from the mobile sector, it has also ventured into areas like artificial intelligence. Reports suggest that the company is exploring the creation of a low-earth orbit satellite network to provide internet from space, which could put it in competition with Elon Musk's Starlink. Musk recently criticized some of India's "oligarchs" and referred to Ambani as "Ambani Prime Minister." Reliance has stated that it has never feared competition and welcomes competitive services, including Starlink.
