Eight young musicians from the Bolívar region of Colombia performed on Tuesday night at the Katara Drama Theatre in Doha. This performance was conducted in collaboration with the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO) and emphasized the importance of peace and strengthening relations between Colombia and Qatar as part of a cultural diplomacy initiative.
An Unforgettable Experience for Young Colombians
The young musicians who participated in this event included Camilo, César, Sebastián, Alan, Luis, Gustavo, Robert, and José. These young artists, aged between 12 and 16, took the stage after a week of rehearsals, cultural visits, and new friendships. For them, these experiences meant being away from their hometown of Santa Rosa del Sur and entering a new world of opportunities.

Their music teacher, Alfredo Ramón Berrocal, pointed out the challenges their community faces. He stated, "Santa Rosa was once known as a red zone, but now we are moving towards becoming green."
Social and economic challenges stemming from armed conflicts in Colombia continue to impact the daily lives of people. According to official reports, an armed shutdown in 2025 trapped over 5,000 people in the rural areas of Santa Rosa del Sur, leading to restrictions on movement and access to essential goods.
Developing Talents and Hope for the Future
Alfredo also mentioned the recruitment of teenagers by armed groups and the limitations facing young people. He emphasized that his students are seeking university diplomas and professional jobs instead of looking for work in gold mines. He added, "Through music, children cultivate a real sense: sensitivity. And a sensitive child never harms."
At this concert, Camilo Vizcaya, the Colombian chargé d'affaires in Qatar, explained that this program gives children from affected communities the opportunity to develop their talents and be recognized beyond their living conditions. He said, "For many of these children, the places they come from are only known through violence and negative headlines."
Eight young musicians participated in this concert as part of Colombia's cultural and sports diplomacy initiative, which has organized 202 international exchanges since 2011 and assisted over 2,200 families.
This cultural event also highlighted the growth of relations between Colombia and Qatar. Vizcaya noted that this is the second consecutive year that Colombian cultural exchanges have been held in Qatar. After this experience, the young musicians returned home on Monday morning, bringing with them stories from this journey filled with new experiences.
