An emergency has been declared in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, known as the political stronghold of Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan. This decision comes in the wake of increasing terrorist attacks in the region and has raised concerns about Khan's health, who is currently in prison.
Suspension of Local Government and Political Changes
Asif Ali Zardari, the President of Pakistan, declared the state of emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday. This action led to the suspension of the local government led by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, headed by Imran Khan. Zardari's government has accused Khan's party of failing to combat terrorism and has appointed its opponents to executive positions.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf views this action as a pretext for political takeover and an attempt to prevent Khan's supporters from moving towards Islamabad. The party is also seeking to challenge the emergency ruling in the Peshawar High Court.
Concerns About Imran Khan's Health
Imran Khan's family and supporters are calling for immediate medical intervention due to his vision problems and fluctuating blood pressure. Khan, who was imprisoned on corruption charges in 2023, has been denied visits with his family for months and denies the allegations against him.
In recent days, thousands of Khan's supporters have gathered in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to demand his release and medical treatment, while several of his sisters and supporters, including party leaders, were arrested prior to the gathering.
Political analysts believe that the current situation will make Imran Khan's position more difficult. Najam Sethi, a political analyst, stated: "The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has lost on both fronts in this situation; not only has it failed to secure any concessions for Khan, but it has also lost control of the government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa."
The government of Shehbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, is trying to prevent a repeat of past unrest and has held talks with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf in recent weeks. However, these negotiations have not led to an agreement. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan has also urged the government and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf to resume meaningful political dialogue.
