Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, concluded his historic two-day trip to Qatar on Wednesday by announcing agreements on liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply and strengthening defense cooperation. This trip is considered the first official visit by a French president to Qatar and occurred while the two countries discussed the unstable regional situation.
Energy and Defense Agreements
Macron announced at a press conference in Doha that France has secured the equivalent of two terawatt-hours of liquefied natural gas from Qatar for the winter season. He also outlined plans to enhance military cooperation, including upgrading Rafale fighter jet capabilities and armored vehicles, as well as discussions on new air defense systems.

The French president was welcomed at Hamad International Airport by Sheikh Saud bin Abdulrahman bin Hassan Al Thani, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense of Qatar. He then met with Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, at the Lusail Palace, where a special reception included military honors and a cultural display from Qatar.
Regional Diplomacy and Economic Cooperation
The two leaders discussed strengthening bilateral relations, particularly in the areas of economy, investment, security, and defense, as well as regional and international developments during their official talks. Macron emphasized that energy supply from Qatar will help France meet its winter energy needs and reduce pressure on domestic energy prices.
Macron also highlighted the importance of Qatar's diplomacy as a mediator in the recent tensions between Iran and the United States, stating that France is working to develop diplomatic channels and encourage de-escalation. In this context, he proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
During the trip, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, and Jean-Noël Barrot, the Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs of France, held the fourth strategic dialogue between Qatar and France in Doha. In this meeting, both sides reviewed the progress made from previous discussions and emphasized continued cooperation on regional and international issues.
After this trip, Macron departed from Doha and was bid farewell at Hamad International Airport.
