The fifth candidate for the leadership of the World Health Organization (WHO) has been introduced as the deadline for candidate registration has ended. According to published information, candidates from five different countries have expressed their readiness to replace Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the current Director-General of the World Health Organization.

Introduction of Candidates

The candidates include Hanan Mohammed Al-Kubari from Qatar, Hanan Balkhi from Saudi Arabia, Hans Kluge from Belgium, Maria Neira from Spain, and Budi Gunadi Sadikin from Indonesia. Hanan Al-Kubari is a former Minister of Health of Qatar, Hanan Balkhi is a physician and the head of the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean, Hans Kluge is a physician and the WHO Regional Director for Europe, Maria Neira is a physician and epidemiologist and a former director of the World Health Organization, and Budi Gunadi Sadikin is the Minister of Health of Indonesia.

Future Plans and Their Impacts

A candidates' forum will be held in November, and the Executive Board of the World Health Organization will shortlist three candidates for final selection in January 2027. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has led this organization since 2017 and has played a key role during the COVID-19 pandemic and other epidemics such as Ebola and the mpox outbreak. During his tenure, Washington, which is one of the largest financial supporters of this organization, decided to withdraw in 2025, and the then-President, Donald Trump, criticized the organization for its mismanagement of the COVID-19 crisis.

The presence and competition of these candidates in the future could not only have profound impacts on global health policies but could also help change the World Health Organization's approaches to health crises. Given the enormous challenges facing health systems worldwide, the selection of a new Director-General could represent a shift in global approaches to health issues.
