Widespread protests were held on Saturday across France, with demonstrators protesting issues such as high prices, social inequalities, and the poor state of the education system.

Background of the Protests and Demands of the Demonstrators

These protests follow an initial wave of demonstrations that began last month due to the state of schools in the country. Students protested against teacher absences and the inadequate educational facilities.

Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, urged the public to maintain 'calm and respect' ahead of the protests and emphasized that the right to protest should be accompanied by 'respect for individuals and property.'

Restrictions and Predictions

Over 600 protests are planned across France, and Interior Minister Laurent Nune announced on France 2 television that 'significant attendance' is expected. Estimates suggest that nearly 200,000 people will participate in these protests.

However, protesters in Paris are facing restrictions, with the police banning gatherings around the Élysée Palace, the Prime Minister's Office, and the Champs-Élysées. A march in the city center has also been declared prohibited.

The main protest in Paris is set to start at 14:00 (GMT 12:00) from the Place de la République and will head north through the city. Reports of clashes between police and protesters have emerged in the Saint-Denis area and at the Gare du Nord train station in the suburbs of Paris.

Subsequently, Sébastien Lecornu, the Prime Minister of France, expressed concern that violence might occur during these protests. He noted that the country is currently in a period of 'fatigue' and is in a 'state of permanent crisis.'

Jordan Bardella, the leader of the far-right National Rally party, also predicted that clashes might occur on this day, describing it as a chaotic day for France.

The student protests that have impacted France in recent weeks have been accompanied by significant violence, resulting in injuries to several protesters and over 900 police officers. In one notable incident, a teenage student lost a hand due to an explosion of a tear gas grenade, and several fingers on the other hand were injured.

The police oversight body is also investigating at least two dozen cases related to allegations of police violence.

These protests have also been supported by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the leader of the leftist 'France Insoumise' party, who participated in one of the rallies on Tuesday. The government has accused Mélenchon's party of fueling public discontent, an accusation that the party has denied.
