Heather Hines, a 65-year-old independent Australian representative, lost her leg following a deliberate car attack in Wangaratta, Australia, and underwent surgery. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon while Hines was unloading items from her car's trunk. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that Hines is in critical condition at Alfred Hospital in Melbourne following the surgery.
Details of the Incident
Hines was struck by a Toyota Land Cruiser near her office at 3:35 PM local time. According to Albanese, the driver of the vehicle passed by Hines, turned around, and deliberately hit her. Albanese described the act as a "deliberate act" and added that this incident tests our "character as a community." Eyewitnesses told the media that they heard a loud crash and saw Hines trapped between two vehicles.

Driver Arrested and Police Investigation
The 43-year-old driver of the vehicle was quickly stopped and detained by Richie Jeffers, a local barber who has been hailed as a hero. Jeffers, with a distressed expression, stated, "My family means everything to me, and my community comes second." After the arrest, the driver was found with a knife in his vehicle, and the Federal Police and Victoria Police are investigating the details of the incident. Reports indicate that this man had previously been known to the police.
The Federal Police have stated that they are working with local police to determine possible charges, including assaulting a public official, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. The motive for this act is still unclear, and Albanese has refrained from making judgments about it.
Increase in Political Violence in Australia
Political violence is rare in Australia, but in recent years, police have witnessed an increase in threats and insults against elected officials. Albanese expressed regret that political discussions have become so heated and personal that they sometimes lead to a crisis in social relations. He emphasized, "In a democracy, it is important for people to have the right to disagree, but that does not mean questioning the motives or patriotism of individuals."
Hines, who entered Parliament in 2019 and previously worked as a nurse and midwife, is known for her efforts in transparency and anti-corruption. She has also been praised for advocating for stronger actions on climate change. Following this incident, expressions of sympathy from various political figures have poured in for Hines, and Angus Taylor, the opposition leader, described the day as "a shocking day for our nation."
