Helen Haines, an independent member of the Australian Parliament, lost one of her legs following a car attack that is reported to be intentional. The incident occurred on Monday in Melbourne, and Haines was taken to the hospital with severe injuries and underwent surgery.
Details of the Incident
In this incident, 65-year-old Haines was struck by an SUV, which police described as a white Toyota, outside her office. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud noise and then saw a woman caught between two vehicles.

The driver, described as a 43-year-old man, was arrested by the police. Anthony Albanese, the Prime Minister of Australia, stated that preliminary investigations indicate that the driver had circled around before hitting Haines while she was loading or unloading items from the trunk of her vehicle. Albanese emphasized that this incident was not accidental and appears to be an intentional act.
Local Hero
Ritchie Jeffries, a local barber whose shop is next to Haines' office, has been recognized as a hero. He quickly rushed to the vehicle and pulled the driver out, keeping him under control until the police arrived. Jeffries stated in an interview that he felt distressed and that is why he took action.
Albanese also referred to the rise in political violence in Australia, stating that such incidents reflect increasing tensions in society. Ben Carroll, the Premier of Victoria, expressed regret over the attack and emphasized that this incident will be devastating for the Wangaratta community and all the people Haines represents.
It is still unclear whether this incident was intentional or not, but generally, threats and harassment against representatives and public officials in Australia and other countries have increased in recent years. Haines, who worked as a nurse and midwife before entering Parliament in 2019, is known for her stance on more serious actions regarding climate change.
