Macklemore, the famous American rapper and staunch critic of the war in Gaza, announced on Friday that major concert venues in the United States, including Madison Square Garden in New York, have prevented his 'Liberation of Palestine' tour from taking place. This tour concluded after three concerts in Europe.
Reasons for the Venues' Lack of Cooperation
Macklemore began this effort after being sidelined as the opening artist on Ed Sheeran's concert tour in August. At that time, he stated that stadium owners opposed the phrase 'Liberation of Palestine' on stage. According to him, since then, nine other major venues have also refrained from hosting these concerts until the end of the current year.
An Unprecedented Experience in 20 Years of Artistic Activity
Macklemore wrote in a social media post: 'These concerts will not be held in these venues.' He added: 'In over 20 years of my artistic career, I have never had such an experience.'
A spokesperson for MSG Entertainment, which manages Madison Square Garden and other venues, stated that their properties are among 'the busiest venues in the world with very limited access' and that Macklemore 'is not an arena-level artist.'
Representatives from Kia Forum quickly did not respond to requests for comment.
Macklemore held 'Liberation of Palestine' concerts in Dublin, Paris, and London to raise funds for organizations supporting the Palestinian people. He also announced that he will collaborate with other artists and organizers to hold more concerts for this cause.
He continued: 'We live in a country that prides itself on freedom of expression. But we have reached a point where a small group of billionaires can decide which causes are acceptable, which voices are welcome, and which human lives are worth defending.'
Palestinian officials have stated that over 74,000 people have lost their lives in the Israeli attack on Gaza. This attack began after Hamas-affiliated fighters killed about 1,200 people in southern Israel on October 7, 2023. Israeli officials have justified the action as self-defense.
