Mahmoud Abbas, the President of Palestine, announced on Saturday that the Palestinian legislative elections have been postponed to September 11, 2027. This news comes especially after widespread rumors had previously emerged regarding the possibility of a delay in holding the elections.

Reasons for the Delay of Elections

This election, which is the first legislative election since 2006 and was planned under international community pressure, was initially set for November 28. However, Abbas announced in an official decree that all elections, including the presidential elections expected to be held in early 2027, have been postponed to the new date. He stated in a statement that Israeli obstacles and the need to create suitable political, security, and field conditions were among the reasons for this delay.

Reactions to the Delay of Elections

In response to Abbas's decision, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar criticized him as a "corrupt dictator." Sa'ar claimed that Abbas, by alleging the existence of Israeli obstacles to holding elections, is trying to evade responsibility and accountability.

Meanwhile, some Palestinians, including Abu Amin Joudeh, a displaced man from the city of Deir al-Balah in the Gaza Strip, expressed concern that the repeated delay of elections may lead to despair and distrust among the people. He stated, "We know that conditions are tough, but how long must we wait for elections?"

Various Palestinian groups, including Abbas's Fatah party and its long-time rival, Hamas, agreed in a meeting in Cairo to postpone the elections. Mohammed Dahlan, head of a splinter group from Fatah, called this delay a "crime against democracy" and stated that Abbas and his associates have turned Palestinian institutions into a private feudalism.

Palestinian analysts also have differing opinions on the reasons for the delay of elections. Ghassan Khatib, a former Palestinian minister, noted that the current conditions in Gaza and Israeli military operations have hindered the holding of elections. He emphasized that the internal conditions of the Palestinians are not the main reason for the delay.

The elections are part of reforms requested by the international community, including the European Union, to encourage democracy in Palestine. The last legislative elections in the Palestinian territories were held in 2006, in which Hamas won over Fatah, leading to a deep political rift between the two groups.
