Pacific countries stressed during an important climate conference in Fiji that global governments must ramp up their efforts to reduce emissions, as the planet is rapidly exceeding a critical temperature target that could lead to rising sea levels and extreme weather conditions.

Priorities of Pacific countries

The Pacific countries, which are among the most vulnerable regions in the world to climate change, are striving to establish their priorities in global climate negotiations at the Fiji ministerial meeting, which serves as a precursor to the COP31 summit in Turkey in November. These priorities include ensuring better access to climate finance, protecting the oceans, and ensuring adherence to the goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, despite UN forecasts indicating that this target will soon be exceeded.

Emphasis on maintaining the 1.5-degree target

Linda Tabuya, Fiji's climate minister, told representatives from over 50 countries at the start of the pre-COP negotiations: "We are rapidly exceeding the 1.5-degree temperature limit." She added, "The data only confirms what Pacific countries are witnessing: tides reaching our homes, bleached reefs that our grandmothers no longer recognize, and villages that we have already had to relocate."

On Tuesday, representatives from about 30 countries gathered in Fiji and, after visiting the vulnerable island nation of Tuvalu, adopted a declaration calling for "deep, rapid, and sustained emissions reductions." This delegation included leaders from Pacific islands and representatives from countries like France, India, and the United Arab Emirates.

Dekon Tsiring, the regional director for Asia and the Pacific at the UN Environment Programme, said: "The risks for the Pacific will remain beyond the temperature peak." He continued: "Every additional 100 years above 1.5 degrees commits the world to an increase of about 40 centimeters in sea level by 2300."

Turkey will host COP31 in the coastal city of Antalya, with Australia leading the negotiations. Chris Bowen, Australia’s climate minister, stated that the pre-COP events in Fiji and Tuvalu this week will shape what may happen at COP31.
