In a military action, Pakistan conducted airstrikes on Afghanistan's border areas on Monday, which Afghan officials say have resulted in at least three fatalities. This action may reignite the tensions between the two countries that had calmed down in recent months.

Afghanistan's Response to the Attacks

Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesperson for the Afghan government, announced that Afghans will respond appropriately to this "aggression." Afghan officials also stated that the airstrikes targeted civilian sites, and Pakistan has not responded to requests for comment.

Relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan have long been affected by tensions and disputes. Pakistan accuses Afghanistan of providing sanctuaries for armed groups that conduct cross-border attacks from Afghan soil. These tensions peaked in February, resulting in hundreds of casualties from airstrikes and other attacks.

Details of the Attacks and Security Implications

The recent airstrikes followed an attack on a police station in Kohat, Pakistan, which resulted in the deaths of at least 24 people, including 15 police officers. These attacks have raised new concerns in Pakistan and highlight the security complexities in the region.

Currently, the Taliban government in Afghanistan has denied accusations of harboring anti-Pakistani militants, stating that the issue of terrorism in Pakistan is an internal matter. However, the brutal attacks that occurred this week in Kohat indicate an expansion of armed group activities in Pakistan.

The airstrikes on Monday caused casualties in Kunar province of Afghanistan, with Hamidullah Fetrat, the deputy spokesperson for the Taliban, reporting that three members of one family were killed and four others were injured. Additionally, in the Barmal district of Paktika province, two areas were attacked, resulting in the destruction of a shop and an empty house, although there are no reports of casualties from these attacks.

These attacks have also fueled rising tensions and concerns in Pakistan regarding the spread of unrest and conflicts. Various militant groups with differing ideologies and support bases, yet a common hostility towards the Pakistani government, continue their activities.

Earlier this year, in another airstrike, over 400 people lost their lives as a result of a Pakistani airstrike in Kabul. According to the Taliban, this attack targeted a drug rehabilitation center, while Islamabad denied the accusation, stating that their targeting has been carefully focused on military facilities and infrastructure supporting terrorism.

Ultimately, given Pakistan's military capacity, which includes 422 fighter jets and over 260 helicopters, while Afghanistan has only six planes and 23 helicopters, further conflicts between the two countries are likely to arise in the near future.
