The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra showcased the rich musical heritage of Mexico in Doha with the concert 'Sounds of Mexico.' This concert was held as part of the Cultural Year of Qatar, Canada, and Mexico 2026 and provided an opportunity to commemorate Mexico's Independence Day.
Musical Performance Conducted by Dimeke
The concert 'Sounds of Mexico' took place at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) and was the first of two musical performances for this cultural year. The performance was led by Enrique Arturo Dimeke, a renowned Mexican conductor, who introduced the audience to Mexico's musical culture by presenting prominent composers and orchestral traditions.

The concert program included notable works such as 'Danzón No. 2' by Arturo Márquez, 'Chacona in E Minor' by Carlos Chávez, 'Sones de Mariachi' by Blas Galindo, and 'Suite Redesc' by Silvestre Revueltas. The evening concluded with the performance of 'Huapango' by José Pablo Moncayo, inspired by the traditional music of the Huasteca region in Mexico and recognized as one of the most iconic expressions of the country's musical identity.
A Festival for the Mexican Community in Qatar
This concert also provided members of the Mexican community in Qatar an opportunity to celebrate their musical heritage abroad. Dimeke expressed his happiness to return to Qatar and share Mexican music with the audience in Doha, describing the program as filled with energy, dance, performance, and reflections of his people's traditions.
This performance marked Dimeke's return to Qatar, where he had previously collaborated with the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra during the Cultural Year of Qatar, Argentina, and Chile 2025. Kurt Meister, the Executive Director of the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, stated that the orchestra's collaboration with the Cultural Initiatives allows audiences in Qatar to become familiar with a broader range of music and discover the diversity of global orchestral repertoire.
The Cultural Initiatives promote cultural exchange through art, heritage, education, sports, and other fields, and the 2026 edition of this initiative brings together Qatar, Canada, and Mexico. The second concert titled 'Sounds of Canada' is scheduled to take place on November 7 at QNCC under the direction of Charles Olivieri-Munroe.
