QatarEnergy has signed agreements to purchase up to 4 million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually from American producer Cheniere Energy until 2054. This agreement is considered a long-term source of global LNG supply for this Gulf nation and is particularly significant in light of the repercussions from the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz.
Long-Term Agreements
This agreement was signed on Thursday and includes two long-term sales and purchase agreements. Shipments will be divided between the Sabine Pass facilities in Louisiana and the Corpus Christi liquefaction facilities in Texas. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2031 and continue until the end of 2054.

The pricing for these purchases will be based on the Henry Hub index in the United States plus a fixed fee. Additionally, deliveries will be made on a Free-on-Board (FOB) basis, meaning QatarEnergy will be responsible for transporting the LNG from the export facilities. One million tons of the annual agreement with Sabine Pass is contingent upon the final investment decision for Cheniere's planned first phase expansion.
Impact on Qatar's Economy
This agreement was signed as new forecasts from the International Monetary Fund indicate that Qatar's economy is expected to decline by 15.6 percent in 2026, a significant revision from the previous forecast of an 8.6 percent decline. Qatar is currently facing disruptions in LNG production and declining exports, which have impacted the country's economy.
The QatarEnergy agreement with Cheniere allows Qatar to strategically move towards a more sustainable future by securing a stable source of LNG. This agreement not only enhances the energy security of the country but also helps maintain Qatar's position as a key player in the global energy market.
With this move, Qatar aims to reduce its dependence on regional energy sources and suppliers, turning instead to international markets and reputable suppliers, such as the United States. This agreement could also pave the way for further cooperation between Qatar and the United States in the energy sector.
