The growth of key sectors of India's economy increased to 7.9 percent in September 2026, indicating a significant improvement from 5.9 percent in August 2026. This data was released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of India and reflects strong growth in several key industries.
Growth in Key Industries
According to the released information, the growth in the Index of Eight Core Industries (ICI) was due to strong performance in the production of iron ore, electricity, coal, refinery products, cement, and steel. Meanwhile, the production of chemical fertilizers, natural gas, and crude oil faced a decline in growth. Iron ore production saw the highest growth among industries at 18.4 percent year-on-year in September. Following that, electricity production grew by 11.4 percent and coal by 10.7 percent.

Negative Impact on Some Industries

These statistics highlight the challenges faced by some industries and emphasize the need for diversification and improvement in these sectors.
The eight key industries include coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertilizers, steel, cement, and electricity. These industries are considered key components of the country's industrial production index, and their growth has a significant impact on the overall economy of India.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry of India stated that coal, refinery products, steel, and iron ore have been the main drivers of overall growth in key sectors in recent months. In the first half of the current year, the cumulative growth rate of the core industries index reached 5.1 percent, showing a significant increase from 2.5 percent in the same period last year.
The ministry also announced that the final index for August 2026 changed to 120.4, which is an increase from the provisional level of 119.2. Therefore, the annual growth rate for August has been revised to 5.9 percent, which is higher than the previous estimate of 4.8 percent.
